I have (at long last) read HYPERION: THE PRIEST'S TALE. I bought a copy from waterstones a few days ago and caught up today.
I ENJOYED this chapter a great deal. On reading the prologue I found the constant references to nonsensical sci fi words overbearing and hard to follow. Either because we've got past the initial hump and established the bedrock terminology of Hyperion's world, because I was in a different mood while reading it, or perhaps because paper copies HIT HARDER than online copies, I did not have the same perception this time round. I found the worldbuilding really interesting and I now want to know more.
In my head the shrike was this huge 50 foot creature lumbering on all fours, not a 3 meter tall man shaped thing, and hyperion was a barren wasteland. In fact hyperion sounds quite nice! I'd like to visit! Feels odd this guy has a cult tho he doesn't sound that scary. I'm sure there will be more from him to come.
Mystery of the bikuras was cool. Pink crucifix worms very creepy. Poor paul. Problematic reference to down syndrome......smh mr dan simmons.

He accepts, moves to Sweden, signs a treaty of friendship with Russia and then declares war on Napoleon the second he's on the back foot. What a cunt!

And yet they still make up, she never cheats again, and they only divorce years and years later for dynastic reasons (she fails to bear a child). Cute!
She's also patholgically addicted to spending money - possibly a trauma response - she has thousands of dresses and shit, spends outrageous amounts on furnishing their house, and is always swarmed by an entourage of salespeople. look at it now, y'know, i think you could say it's not in it's golden age anymore, and that late summer neko last year was super comfy, but i think the fact that this place has survived, with daily posting for nearly 10 months, even after someone said it's pretty dead is really cool.

I've spent a long period of my life posting on imageboards related to cosplay tiktoks now, I think I quite like imageboards, they feel like the old internet, modern websites just feel souless, they're designed for massive traffic, individual users don't do anything but make the number go up, you'll never discuss anything with a stranger on 'social' media. forums are pretty much dead, killed off by reddit, another huge website that absorbed a whole medium into itself.
recently i've been rewtahcing the webseries arby n the chief, and season 6 and 7 are focused on the internet as a social hub. I like it's interpretation of the online network for halo, a place with servers, and mods, and custom scripts, which really didn't exist at the time for halo reach, but it is a more interesting internet than the one that halo reach had, where you just selected a gamemode and it put you in it, there was no server browser, no ability to choose exactly what you wanted to play, because freedom of choice was taken away to make it easier for casuals to find games.

I think people started fracturing themselves again, zoomers are not using big websites like reddit anymore, they're on insta, snap, tiktok, where there's some more direct connection to the person they're interacting with.
I dunno how popular is discord but I would imagine there's plenty of small groups there, like insanely many. It's just sad that instead of it being open it started closing up, making people balkanize. Neko is pretty unique in that sense since there's a pretty tight knit group here and it's still more open than anything towards people that are like-minded.

I actually have no idea either. I only know about it because of a close friend I've had that was much younger than me and we shared a lot at the time. If you posted on 4chan prior to the 2016 US elections you'd be familiar with the phrase "lurk moar", if even the biggest imageboard on the planet could have consistent board cultures that people would rightfully be called out for ignoring, it's only logical that a website with a generous average of 5 active users would be the same. It's actually stronger for neko, 4chan had millions of users, even a slow board could take the hit of one guy acting up, but if someone starts regularly posting here and it doesn't fit the theme, it erodes the quality of the site.

The 'policing of behaviour' is only so overt because it's an anonymous imageboard but if you've ever joined any group ever you should know that groups police themselves like this all the time, cultures always form, and people that battle against the group's culture are policed out of it, usually with social ostracization. At the board game club I go to, I've heard of people quitting because they felt they weren't being included, and I've heard regular attendees privately say they avoid those people due to things they've said, most commonly it's been transphobic jokes that have gotten people soft-removed.
There's a ton of trannies in the club, don't make anti-trans jokes, it seems pretty obvious.
To relate that to nekochen, it's a small group, just lurk, understand the culture and if you like it stay and keep posting, if you don't agree with it, move on.
