My Issues with the d&d game is just that it's just so fucking sanitised, I don't feel like our characters have been in any danger. He publicly rolled on the random encounter table for the ocean and we got an adult blue dragon... at level 3, by all accounts said dragon should party wipe us 3 times over. Instead, it cast it's breath weapon, instantly killed 2 PCs, both of whom were revived within the same round with bullshit made up mechanics, and then the party's succubus just blasted it down with high level magic.
It's been 5 sessions of us just sitting around this succubus, who massively out levels us and trivialises any encounter she's in. Last session we ran in to rescue her, and some other NPCs, when she was attacked by a demon, said demon had this spell that summoned swarms of hands to attack everyone, so it was like an AOE battle, the issue is the hands had 1 hp and 10 ac, so you'd easily hit them and any hit was a kill, but he summoned like 10 every turn.
I didn't have any aoe shit, so I just sat in a corner hiding behind a shield and slowly poked at the boss with magic missle, I did 40 damage in the fight. In total we did 120 damage to him, the GM later revealed he had 220 HP, though it didn't matter because at 120 points of damage he just... teleported away. Oh boy, what a boring fight. The demon was wasting his turns attacking the 80 hp succubus, so essentially the PCs were just stood around killing swarms of magically summoned hands and plinking damage at the demon until he left.
We actually did nothing in the fight, because the antagonist was overlevelled to fuck due to the succusbus being way more powerful than us, and it was really her fight, so we're just fucking side characters.

I can understand not wanting to wipe out the party too early but sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do, especially with like the dragon, they're smart, don't have to kill anyone just wipe the floor with party and make them suffer.

Yeah, it's a dragon, specifically a sea dragon and we're on a boat. He could've just sat at max range and breath weaponed the boat until we were all forced into the water, where he could pick us off one by one. The dragon acted retarded, running in, climbing on the boat, breath weaponing once and then just... dying. So at level 3 we killed an adult blue dragon. Oh, and by session 5 we've all got like 3 different magical items each. We're so overgeared, and so unchallenged in these fights, the most fun I've had was last session where we spent 20 minutes debating how to open a locked door in an inn, because our rogue KEPT failing their lockpicking checks, it was pretty funny
Challenge is part of the fun for TTRPG games, when the players feel like they're invincible they get bored.
One of my favourite sessions/things we've done in a TTRPG game was when, at an early level, like 3 or something in the science fiction RPG "stars without number" was we engineered a successful boarding and capture of a frigate class starship. There was a 'goldrush' in the local area of space, lots of different groups found out that there was a powerful ancient weapon somewhere in that planetary system, so everyone who was anyone was there looking for it, the trouble was that there wasn't any good intel on WHERE it was, so you had different factions going to different planets, our group showed up, late, intending to look for it to but saw a greater prize.
Ad-Astra, was the name of a corporation in the local area, that we'd seen killing off innocent merchants before, so there was some bad blood there and we wanted to make ourselves look like heroes and also steal their ship which was a hell of a lot better than ours, so, figuring that the majority of their security would've been down on the planet looking for the weapon, we came up with a crazy plan that involved dropping our ship into stealth mode, flying on a course towards their vessel in orbit, and jumping out of the airlock with spacesuits, using our momentum to carry us the final hour or two over to them, with no risk of our ship getting close enough to trigger any alarm systems. It took some hard navigation rolls to plot a course, and the use of some jetpacks to course-correct, but we all got over there and inside, and it was just like we thought, MOST of their security was gone, save for two strong combat androids. We battled those androids in their private quarters, we battled them in the engine room, we battled them in the cargo hold. We kept fighting them, and they kept hitting us hard and skittling away down an elevator shaft or through an airvent.

If that's better than fighting (although it is pretty humorous) then I think GM has to reevaluate his encounter strategy. Really if the party is bigger than 3 and encounter is challenging enough not downing a PC should be a rarity, which does make things interesting when people have to desperately try to save each other. Or just work together to keep the things afloat.
I assume you meant young blue but anyway that's very retarded. Unless you have like 12 PCs there's almost no way he could be defeated by lvl 3s

In the end, their security team had gotten back in a shuttle and was on course to dock back with the ship. We were forced to take the crew hostage and barter, their lives for the security chief's promise of safe passage and an agreement that we'd keep the ship. The androids disagreed with this and wanted to just kill us, regardless of hostages, but the chief overruled them. Bringing in witnesses in the form of ships from the other factions nearby, we brokered a peace deal that all recognised, our rag-tag group of nobodies, guys who'd only gone into space and left their homeworld for the first time like 4 months ago had just taken down and seized the most powerful ship in that corner of space. All without actually killing anyone, sure, some people were injured but nobody died.
Everyone slowly escorted back to the company's headquarters, the hostages were released, and the ship was ours. Our fame skyrocketed, we got a new ship and the events were so crazy and distracting that people sort of forgot about the ancient weapon everyone was looking for, it never ended up being discovered.
That was fun. It was a really tough fight, those androids were high level, I spent many turns just closing doors on them in order to deny them an action as they'd have to open it again. It was something I came up with, wasn't the GM's plan, and we made it work.

It is a difficult topic for me, she's at the age I've discovered chans pretty much, so it probably colors my view a fair bit.
On one hand she might just be "like me" and understand that chans are not something to be taken seriously and just laugh at the writings of madmen, on the other she might just be clueless and not understand how it is affecting her mentally.
From what little I know about her and I probably don't know much sturdy is not really a place for her, really it's not a place for me either and I'm theoretically a "hardened veteran" at this point.

Starting my masters was supposed to be a fresh start, but 6 weeks into it and I've not made any friends and the only social thing I do is d&d club, which I've blogged about as being not very enjoyable. It's hard to talk to people, it already feels like everyone seperated into their friend groups in the first week, and now it's locked in. Hell, plenty of people are undergrads that moved to a masters at the same uni, so for them life didn't change, they're at the same place with the same people learning basically the same things. ahhh.
